Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Baladi Immersion – 10-weeks online – autumn of 2026
The topic of Baladi-style dance (and music) is very close to Annah’s heart. The Baladi Immersion format has been offered 2 times before, in 2022 & 2024.
For the autumn of 2026 is time for a new edition – built on Annah’s extensive experience & knowledge + lots of new knowledge & insights.
The course explores Baladi-style dance & music, its history & development, the concept of Baladi in Egyptian culture, and the various aspects of ”Baladi-style” dance: from Raqs Baladi as social dancing to the adaptations made for stage.
Technique-wise we will find our way into lots of grounded hipwork, from foundations to a wide range of variations and expression, and the relaxed flow of movement that is characteristic of Baladi-style dance.
While exploring Baladi music, from its emergence in the 1950’s and onward we will try out expression ranging from the heavy, soft, lingering to the extrovert, playful and sassy.
IMPROVISATION is inseparable from Baladi and is therefore a core part of the course. Annah will offer guidance & space for exploration both for you who haven’t improvised before and for you who want to go further in your improvisation skills.
