Raqs Sharqi Immersion module 4 – Mejanse
Sunday Nov 7, Nov 21, Nov 28 + Dec 5
(no class on Nov 14)
In studio at Gamla Skolan in Ask + Online via Zoom
18.30-20.00 CEST / UTC+2
Module 4 of the Raqs Sharqi Immersion programme brings modules 1-3 together in the traditional Raqs Sharqi entrance piece – the Mejanse. This is where you meet your audience for the first time, giving them a sample of what to expect during the full show.
A mejanse typically includes an elegant entrance, dynamic hipwork sections, a lyrical/dramatic part, one or more folklore sections, sometimes a short tabla solo, and then a finale that often echoes the theme from the entrance.
This means that mejanse music follows a specific format, surely with variations but still readily recognizable.
The 4 x 1,5 hour course includes
- Music theory and interpretation – listening exercises, rhythms, musical cues and transitions
- Adaptable choreo structure to one specific mejanse piece, giving you room for personal interpretation
- Improvisation exercises with parts of several different mejanses
- Stagecraft tips & exercises – for example how to adjust your entrance for different stage setups, how to dispose of your veil in a graceful way, how to let energy go up & down to create a captivating experience for the audience.
Level: Experienced (minimum 2-3 years of previous studies recommended)
Instructor: Annah Raqs / Anna Hyberg – read more about Annah
